BAE Systems Academy

BAE Systems Academy

BAE Systems, Construction Value - £15.6M

The new training facility was completed in 2016 and provides a world class learning environment for apprentices. The building incorporates advanced manufacturing workshops, CNC & Carbon fibre machining and aircraft hanger to the ground floor level. The upper floor levels include offices, classrooms, lecture theatres, virtual reality suite, catering and break out areas.

The building utilises addressable high efficiency LED lighting throughout, automatically controlled via occupancy and daylight sensing to minimise energy use, heat gain and maintenance requirements.

A thermal dynamic simulation model was developed to evaluate environmental conditions within the building and optimise the use of natural ventilation solutions. Each acoustically treated and actuated façade louvre is controlled via the building management system to react to internal and external conditions and occupancy levels. The system takes advantage of free night time cooling and removes the requirement for mechanical cooling to over 90% the facility.

Battery Energy Storage facility, Rooscote

Battery Energy Storage facility, Rooscote

Futureserv were engaged for this challenging project to develop the MEP solutions from Concept through to Technical Design.

The development which is one of Europe’s largest was constructed on the site of the former Roosecote Power Station to take advantage of the existing HV grid connection and can provide a sub-second response to fluctuations in energy demand on the distribution network.

Futureserv worked closely with the Client and specialist teams to develop bespoke Building Service solutions including HVAC, fire suppression, HV/LV distribution, DC power cabling, internal & external lighting, fire detection, security systems and extensive controls.

The main battery storage hall is surrounded by liquid cooled inverters coupled to cast resin power transformers all of which interface to the HV distribution grid via a very large 132kV step up transformer located adjacent to the main facility.

A major project challenge was designing HVAC solutions capable of maintaining environment conditions for the sensitive, high value batteries and associated control equipment during discharge. Inside the facility, the use of 3D Revit coordination ensured that the kilometres of DC power and control cabling could be accommodated without compromising access to the thousands of batteries required to deliver 49 Megawatts of electrical energy.

Futureserv were retained during the Construction stage to provide technical support and oversee commissioning of the installed systems.

A glimpse inside this amazing facility and its capabilities can be seen on Centrica’s video in the link below.

Praxis Real Estate Management

The redevelopment of the former RAF Sealand station forms part of the Northern Gateway project and will incorporate up to 4 million sq. ft. of industrial/commercial accommodation, roadside retail and over 1000 new homes.

Futureserv were appointed to secure and co-ordinate utilities to the site, onsite distribution and carry out the design of landlords and public realm services.

Close liaison with prospective tenants was a key requirement to ensure that each new building could be efficiently supported via the utility and communications infrastructure.

Wincanton Logistics, Samlesbury

Wincanton Logistics, Samlesbury

BAE Systems, Construction Value - £11M

The 165,000 sq.ft. logistics facility was completed in 2016 and is located on the new Lancashire Enterprise Zone. The facility includes high rack storage, cold room, packing workstations and extensive support offices.

Futureserv were employed by the Client to design all MEP systems and utility connections for the new facility. Sprinkler protection meeting NFPA standards are provided to all areas including 'In Rack' heads. High efficiency LED lighting solutions, automatically controlled are used throughout all internal and external areas to minimise energy use, reduce maintenance and help achieve a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating.

The main warehouse areas utilise an aspirating fire detection system to provide early warning of smoke or fire. Comfort cooling provided throughout the office areas and natural ventilation systems within the warehouse maintain environmental conditions automatically.

A collaborative design approach with the Architect and Structural Engineers was adopted from Stage 2 Concept and utilised BIM (Building Information Modelling) to optimise space and prevent clashes with structure and racking.

Pochin Developments

Futureserv carried out the Building Services design for the new SIRA HQ, a mix of office, laboratory and logistics accommodation on this 40 acre Business Park in North Wales which incorporates a fully sustainable urban drainage system, approved by the Environment Agency.

Working on behalf of SIRA, an engineering safety regulator, Futureserv provided MEP and BREEAM Support for the development of the 27,000 sq. ft. building which is now the HQ for SIRA’s UK Operations. Work began in April 2014, with completion achieved on programme in Spring 2015.

BAE Systems, Samlesbury

BAE Systems, Samlesbury

BAE Systems, M&E Value - £9M

Futureserv carried out the MEP design for the F35 production facility at Samlesbury. Phase 1 of the project provided in excess of 12,000m2 of machining, manufacturing, assembly and support areas and was completed in 2013. Phase 2 added a further 4,500m2 of assembly space with extensions to spray shops, shipping areas and was completed during early 2017.

The extensive facility includes close control air conditioning throughout the manufacturing areas controlled via a sitewide building management systems (BMS).

Sprinkler protection, water mist, VESDA and networked addressable fire alarm systems protect the facility against fire.

BAE Systems, Brough

BAE Systems, Brough

BAE Systems, M&E Value - £2.5M

Futureserv carried out the detailed Building Services design for the refurbishment and adaptation of 8no buildings on the historic BAE Systems site at Brough, Hull.

The projects included formation of a new Mission Systems facility, Generation Test, Reprographics, Waste Handling Centralised Plant, Site Welfare and in excess of 50,000 sq.ft. of Design, Development and Support offices.

In addition to standard Mechanical & Electrical systems, aircraft power supplies and water mist fire suppression systems were developed to meet the specific customer requirements.

Mono Pumps, Chadderton

Mono Pumps, Chadderton

Futureserv carried out the detailed design of Mechanical & Electrical services to support the consolidation of industrial manufacturing into a single 330,000 sq. ft. facility in Chadderton, Oldham.

The project included conversion and full refurbishment of a large, highbay factory on the former BAE Systems site.

Extensive power distribution busbars and compressed air systems were incorporated into the design to maximise flexibility and provide a futureproof working environment.

Other specialist systems included fume extraction, spray booths and environmental controls which were developed to accommodate the manufacturing and assembly processes.

Buisness Park, Sheffield

Buisness Park, Sheffield

Sheffield Business Park is one of Yorkshire's largest business parks with an established tenure of Blue-chip occupiers. The previous phase of the Business Park extended the development site by offering a further 900,000 sq.ft. of land for Planning Uses incorporating accommodation for offices, business and manufacturing/warehouse.

Futureserv’s role in the site development was to acquire a new 4MVA electrical HV supply to serve the new business park and link it to the existing network currently serving Phase 1.

Separate projects focussed on bringing live Gas and Water, together with BT infrastructure to the site in a coordinated manner, to reduce site times and minimise disruption to the existing Business Park and its tenants.
